i dont think its that really,he seems quite ok with letting his opponent win a point,cause he wont easily run down a ball unless he REALLY wants to.its the fact that he lacks the competitive nature many other players have

I think you're forgetting the strives the sport has made a long the way. It's become a lot more fast paced than it was in the 80's for example, not to mention the 60's,70's. So to be honest when you compare Laver with Federer today, Laver wouldn't stand a real chance, and probably won't against a lot of top 20 players. The game has progressed and the players are becoming better and better.
It's save to say that Federer is one of the best, if not THE best out there ever.

and i thinmk you are foregetting that laver would have killed all your feds if he had carbon rackets, advanced shoes, computer training to pinpoint players weaknesses, access to all the food advancements, all the medication, protective wears. In those days there was no such thing as go out there and smack. Give theses players those wooden rackets and lets see what they can do with them.

if you research. Laver's rivals had no weaknesses while fed has lived (not feds fault) in an era where most of his rivals like Roddick and hewitt had obvious weaknesses or his rivals were too young like Nadal, Djokovic and may be murray.
I would have loved to see how many slams would have won if Nadal and Djokovic were of the same age and era as his.
Look at how many titles Laver and Borg had to share cuz their rivals had such compelete games.

you are right in the respect that federer can be considered ONE of the all time greats, not the greatest.
It is not possible to extrapolate by saying what laver would have done in this era or what roger would have done in laver's era, its just impossible. There are so many variables to it.
No wonder why there has been no concensus over who is the greatest of all time, while many have said Laver is. Otherwise its like 10% fed,10%connor,10%mcenroe,15%sampras some lendl and rest borg.

That's exactly my point, the sport has progressed and so has the technique. Give him a carbon racket, it won't make much of a difference. The technique has improved over the years and so has the effectiveness of the sport. Apparel is not going to save him from that. The only way you can measure them is to measure talent, which is really hard to do.

Yes. Give federer a wooden racket and he wont be able to play those shots as it is very hard to produce such power with wooden rackets. Technique has not improved over the years thats just a perception not a fact, there is not written research which can proove thtis.
Apparel does matter, Shoes definitely do, i dont know whether you know this, but the shoe technology has progressed so much. Now they have all sorts of air jump crap in them.
Laver just wore SHOES,fed n nadal wears more than that

its really hard to say who is the best ever, ive seen the greats and just from a technique standpoint i would have to go with mcenroe and federer. both just had that natural gift. mcenroe didnt practice that much, you would see him warm up before a match just nailing serves. for those that say tennis is the only sport that has changed drastically, not true. look at football for example, players are much faster and stronger than say 20 years plus.

and to say that fed and other players that didnt have wooden rackets wouldnt have done so well is dumb. u cant compare it based on that. look at his technique, i think he wouldve managed. pro baseball players still use wooden bats. i think theyre doing just fine
