I am heavily aware of the fact that TFF did a video long before Gary. I knew before I posted the video. You'd think that one of the progenitor of the video would know these things.) Throughout the video children are making animated figures on the sidewalk below. (the song was featured in the movie Donnie Darko. If you haven't seen it, seriously consider it.)

The way they made the shapes would be the same way you make shapes in marching band, its just memory, like muscle memory of how many steps and length of steps. As you can see they use what is called a scatter drill to get into the shapes. But they probably have marks that they look for, since it doesn't matter which way they look as long as it is not up.
Anyway this song is awesome, very emotional.
