As requested. A shorter version of the approach into Kai Tak without the music. Again, the lead in lights are barely visible through the rain as the video starts and then we get a great view of the checkerboard through to touchdown. This approach is in the rain. The other video is a little clearer but still grey out.

If AP is linked with ILS and Appr switch is on it will, however, it only works effectively at about 11NM from the runway, and you have to be close or nearly directly ahead of the runway. Your AP will go of the glideslope and will land it automated. You will usually also have Auto-throttle on also.

because kai tak didnt have an ils approach due to the fact that you had to make a turn before landing, autopilot could screw that up

it was called a igs approach you would flow the glide slope and localizer as normal then make a visual turn to line up with the runway. the big checkerboard was for helping the pilots know when to make the visual turn

Awesome landing if I've ever seen one! For better or worse, Kai Tak is no longer there to test the pilots' true skills, but these guys really did an impressive job; looking at this video one would actually believe that the Runway 13 approach was no big deal... Respect!

it only existed in Kai Tak. It's like an ils approach, but instead of guiding the plane towards the threshold, it quides it to the check board. Then the pilot performs a visual turn and landing. And by the way, IGS stands for instrumental guidance system.
