The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum. The Mughal Emperor Shāh Jahān commissioned it as a mausoleum for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1648.
The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on many design traditions, particularly Hindu, Persian and earlier Mughal architecture. It is famous for the use of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. (Wikipedia)

theres actually a really valid train of thought that says the Taj mahal was a hindu temple originally. Shiva temple. And that when the moghuls invaded agra it was basically claimed by shah. lots of incidental evidence - look it up.
A bit like the twin towers attacks being a gov conspiracy though - all feasable - but no way of actually knowing for sure.

just seen your comment - I've seen lots of info saying the same thing. The only prob now is that these views appear to be anti muslim. People have knee jerk reactions to that sort of thing.
but rationally looking at the information it seems more likely that it was hindu than a mausoleum. It show all the characteristics of a hindu temple.

The fact remains that the whole structure resembles a mosque rather than a Hindu temple.
Even if it was renovated the basic structure of such a monument could not have been altered.
The same guy who believes Taj Mahal is a Shiva temple also believes the Kaaba in Mecca and the Vatican in Rome were also Hindu temples.
I find it all quite absurd really.
