According to Tommy Allsup the three that were supposed to be on the plane were Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup (They were in the band). The heater on the bus was broken so Waylon gave his seat to The Big Bopper because the Bopper had the flu, and apparently Ritchie had asked Tommy several times if he could take his place on the plane and Tommy kept saying no, but after about the 5th time Tommy jut flipped a coin and said "Call It" and that was that
