From that time period and genre, Queen was pretty much THE glam rock band. Very few bands or musicians could touch Queen, but Sweet came close. Queen's music had more of an epic feel to it, like you were listening to music history as it was being made. Sweet had an incredible sound, but was more suited to having fun. Sweet was music for clubs, Queen was music for arenas. Well, that's my opinion. RIP Freddie.

Before anyone goes off and tries to lynch me, I love both bands, Similar sounds, yes, but they do have some differences. It's like the difference between a prime rib and a filet mignon. Both delicious and prime cuts, just different subtle details.

At the time there was a fair bit of rivalry, ie on the cover of Give Us A Wink (I think) Queen are a bunch of w--kers. Personally I was a fan of both.

Queen was a great band, and I don't mean them any disrespect, but Sweet we're better. Sweet came-out long before Queen. And Queen learned everything they knew from Sweet. Take it from me, I was there!!!

One of my favourite singles fron the 70's - a great song that was matched by the superb 'Sweet F.A.' on the B-side. According to my Guinness Book of British hits, Sweet F.A. was the only Sweet album to get into the charts while the group were together, so I suppose they relied on their single releases to become successful.

Sweet were simply outstanding. Backing vocals, harmony, musicianship. You can only compare them with Queen. Im not saying that its my opinion. Im saying this because its the way it is. They were about the same level, but Sweet didnt get the credit they deserved.

Most of Sweet's early stuff was bubblegum crap written by the pop song duo Chin and Chapman (Little Willy, etc.), but once they started writing their own stuff, they RULED!

Finally, I thought I was the only one. Actually the producer Roy Thomas Baker (producer of Queen, Nazareth, Journey, etc. ) stole big time from this band. He even produced The Darkness which copies the Sweet uh, sorry Queen sound.

I pointed this out a year ago lol. (see above).
Due to contractual reasons, they didn't actually play their instruments until Wig Wam Bam.
I quite liked some of the bubblegum pop crap and, as pointed out in a reply, it was the path that got them noticed. But they could always play and they always wanted to be a rock band.
