Also, Theatre calls for a lot more dramatic liscence - audience members using their imaginations to fill out the sets; knowing that Joannna's dancing is a flashback, etc.

Even though I've loved Helena Bonham Carter since the Merchant-Ivory days, I have to say the movie Sweeney was really jarring for me. But that's probably because I fell in love with this particular Angela Lansbury production, and especially the cast recording. The score was drastically altered for the film--not, in my opinion, for the better. But I completely agree--this is one of the most inspired and brilliant musicals ever produced. It's what first made me a Sondheim fan.

There is no comparison!!! Angela Lansbury is the best Nellie Lovett! Helena Bonham Carter sadly had none of Angela's energy and played the part like a jaded goth chick.

This may be confusing to people who saw the movie first. Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett are supposed to be old. Not aging like perhaps in the movie, but old. Tim Burton didn't really project that detail though. Although, I do LOVE how Helen plays Mrs.Lovett.
