Uploaded by: RockyLethe Video Description:
This is June Christy's Something Cool recorded in the 1950's. She started out replacing Anita O'Day as a singer in Stan Kenton's orchestra and branched out on her own later on. I have searched for some of her material here on YouTube and didn't find much. That's very dissapointing because I love her voice and I feel that she is severely underated. So anyway, this has inspiried me to try out this video thing and make my own with the materials I have of her music. This is my first one so please be kind...I mostly just want people to hear her music. I hope everyone else that wanders around youtube becomes inspired to make and upload their favorite artists or hobbies because there isn't enough quality music out there to enjoy and we need to remind people of the classics and the good things in life. Anyway, thanks for viewing and let me know if you have any tips for future videos because I'm just a beginner and any help would be appreciated. :O)

Thanks for this. Somehow I've missed June in my Jazz collection. An oversight I will soon correct. Please keep reminding us younger jazz fans of the great talents we have missed. Nice touch ending on the obit.

I too have the original recording backed by Pete Ruggulo on Capitol Records I bought the record for $1.49 in 1953. I was 11 yrs of age. Just by chance I had heard her voice while turning the knob on the radio. It was a jazz station that was playing this record. I don't remember the call letters of the station but I'll always remember her beautiful voice. I still have that album It's quite worn; cover held together w/tape. I've since purchased a later CD reissue of the monaural version.

This video is the best...really the best. I unfortunately never heard June Christy sing. I am 66 years old - and I have always loved Julie London - who sings the only version I ever heard of this song - and I know every word and can sing the whole thing. Now to find it by (the original singer) is too too special. I never could find it on youtube by Julie London - but instead I found gold right here. Thank you so much.

Well done! I first heard her on the radio at night in Austin and was just amazed at her voice. I own the album on vinyl and play it all the time. Every song on that album is great. Beautiful voice. I love the way she sings.

Thank you for adding this. June Christy recorded "Soemthing Cool" several times. I think this is not the version on the album titled "Soemthing Cool", but a later version. They are both wonderful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This remembrance is just wonderful and June is SUPERB as usual on this second version of her original recording: both are superb. Your video compelled me to find this second version and I did at Amazon as a single. Now I listen to both, back-to-back on ITunes. Thanks again. "The Misty Miss Christy" was great.

I'm delighted that this song attracts so many people of such diverse ages. That's a sign of June's greatness. In 1954 or 1955 I was in Singapore at a cinema, and I saw a short film of her singing this song. The soundtrack kept very close to Pete Rugolos' original arrangement and June looked what she was... cool! I had no idea I would see her live about 10 years later. Now if someone could find that film that would make my day.

What a superb singer. This is not the version on the "Something Cool" album, which opens the (excellent) slide-show, but a later version, in which she takes more risks and performs some phrases rubato (e.g. 2:56-3:00), but in which her voice has become slightly grainy. I prefer the later work, which has more depth even if it loses some purity of tone. Her duet album with Stan Kenton on piano shows her at her most intimate, the "Something Cool" album at her most inventive. Thanks for posting.
