Haley ran for the elevator she'd just seen Kevin get onto.
She got there just as the doors were about to close and had to stick her hand in the doorway. The elevator's doors slid open obligingly for her.
Besides Kevin, there were two doctors having a discussion inside. One of them pushed the button numbered 3 and the other made no motion to push another button so it was safe to assume they'd be getting off at the next level together.
The elevator went up
The doctors got off
They were alone
Haley wasted no time. She pushed the little red button which, unless movies had lied to her, would bring them to an emergency stop. And it did. A terribly loud, rough, screeching stop to be exact.
"we need to talk" she said to Kevin
Kevin tugged on the collar of his shirt "get this elevator moving again and we'll talk all you want"
"no I want to talk now"
"Have I ever mention to you that I'm slightly claustrophobic?"
"well then we'd better get started then"
Kevin stared at her with his arms folded across his chest and an eyebrow lifted. She mirrored the same look back to him.
"fine, you win" he said deflating as he took off his jacket and slid down to the floor "what do we have to talk about?"
Haley groaned, he obviously wasn't going to make this easy for her.
"I want to talk about us"
"what us?" he said stiffly
"come on Kevin, you heard what Bridget said. It was all an accident."
"no what happened between her and Sean was the accident, but your reaction to it...that's a whole other story"
"the first sign of a struggle and your willing to call it quits?"
"I think it's a little more than just a struggle Haley. You called him your boyfriend and the last I checked, you weren't dating him, your dating me....were dating me."
Haley gulped down the lump that formed in her throat and paced to the other side of the elevator
"it was a slip of the tongue"
"a slip?"
"just an old instinct from when I used to go out with Sean"
With amazing speed for a guy wearing a pair of skinny jeans, Kevin stood up and crossed over to where she stood. He leant into her body with his, forcing her to back into a corner. Without having to touch her at all, he kept her pinned there with his eyes.
"so you could honestly tell me right now that you don't have feelings for him anymore? That you don't love him?"
The right answer would of course be yes, she didn't have feelings for Sean anymore. A simple yes and all would be forgiven. But Haley couldn't bring herself to lie so blatantly while still looking into his eyes.
"no" she said as quietly as possible, hoping maybe he wouldn't hear but having no such luck.
Slowly Kevin straightened up and started to back away from her. Alarmed she put a hand on his cheek and brought him back to her. An almost undetectable shiver coursed through him and with his eyes closed he let his head rest against the palm of her hand, soaking in the warmth through his skin.
"Kevin, they say that you can never really stop loving your first love. That they will always hold a special place in your heart and in my case it's true but only to a certain extent"
He started to move away from her touch, disturbed by what she'd said but Haley just moved closer to him and lowered her voice as she spoke again. He brought his head closer to hers so he could hear her.
"it's not really love I have for him anymore Kevin, it's more of a fondness. A year ago I thought I'd never be able to love someone more than I thought I loved him. But then you showed up and proved me wrong. Every day you prove me wrong all over again and..."
Haley struggled with herself, trying to find a way to explain all her emotions
" I-I....I just don't know how else to say it.." she said meekly
Kevin stood a little ways away from her now, just looking at her. Taking his silence to mean he still didn't forgive her she gave a defeated sight and made to push the red button again so the elevator would start moving again but Kevin caught her hand in his.
He brought his other hand to the nape of her neck and played with the hair there for sometime, sighing with ecstasy. Then with a small smile he tilted her head back and gave her a long slow kiss that left her still breathing hard with her eyes closed long after he'd pulled away.
"that was enough" he murmured into her hair
