i think the only time you can tell that death is truly after them is when todd dies in the first one from the leaking toilet and chokes on the shower line, because then the water goes back in the pipe. everything else could be a freak accident

well, the main thing is that you can't cheat death, which means that whenever death choose you... well it CHOSSES you, so its time, the point of these movies, is that for some reason these persons manage to evade death by premonitions, and so inocent people who wasn't yet suppose to die, die.
So we can say that Death gets mad for having take people he didn't choose, so he sort of starts to ''hunt'' those who got away, theres a way to beat death, but you gotta see part 1 and 2
