Its not even fair to compare Upright bass and electric bass in my opinion. Anybody ever picked up an upright? Its 100 times harder to play than a electric and the concept of jazz is much harder to master on an upright as apposed to the electric bass. Ive been playing electric for 5 years and upright for 1 and a half and thats just my opinion.

Anthony Jackson said it best regarding electric vs. upright in jazz. "If it's played badly on upright does that make it jazz?" I would rather hear someone like Anthony Jackson play jazz on electric as opposed to someone w/bad intonation, less chordal knowledge, and a bad sense of timing play it on upright. But this is my opinion.

NHOP played electric, but his technique on double bass is almost annoying, it's SICK. No one can play with that intonation. Maybe we could discuss if charlie haden(w/Gismonti Trio), gary peacock(w/Jarret Trio)(or others) play more musical solos... But I don't know... he's such an incredible musician... Even if he wasn't a composer, he made beautiful arrangments for scandinavian folk, so we can't compare Jaco and him, they are totally different (and awesome) people. Just my opinion!

Joe rules - the KING. Nobody better ever. I was just watching the great Birelli playing Donna Lee and thought "Wow - that is super fast...TOO fast at expense of musicality, tone and accuracy," then I clicked on Joe's version here - and it's twice again as fast! but musical and supremely accurate. Mindblowing Joe Pass RIP.

NHOP = Niels Henning Orsted Pederson, and he was amazing. He passed just a couple years back. But there isn't a bass player alive who couldn't use a lesson from Ray Brown. Ask any musician... they want a bassist who has the discipline to walk quarters like there's no tomorrow.
