Video Description:
No one can be told what 'The Knowledge' is, you have to see it for yourself; and I do urge you to track down this great TV film from 1979 written by the great Jack Rosenthal.
Oh ok then, if you want to know what the knowledge is then watch this fantastic scene where the late Nigel Hawthorne playing the evil Mr Burgess, explains all.
This isn't the complete sequence as it's intercut with monologues from the applicants. I've cut it down to get it under ten minutes and preserve Mr Burgess' speech.

To tell the truth I didn't really consider Nigel
Hawthorne to be such a "real Class" Thespian.
However after seeing this and after having done
"the knowledge" for myself from 87-90,my view is
that Mr Hawthorne was a first rate Actor,I swear
he "must" have got to know these men as he has
captured most of their mannerism's and the way
they all Talk and Act.This is a very observed
take off of "Those who must be obeyed".These
blokes wield enormous power over the Knowledge
Boys.56 days Lads??

I have to confess markcoe69 I was a minicab driver in that time period working from Kingston upon Thames . A few of the guys did the knowledge and worked Surbiton station , but not me.We all had some great times though and my boss used to draw little maps for me including trees and lamp posts !I got pretty good at south west and west London but east London is still pretty much a mystery to me! Is the "Ace Cafe" still there with the spoons chained to the counter ! lol

Yes, it's a brilliant take-off of the PCO examiners. Anyone who hasn't done the knowledge must think it's an absurd exaggeration but he got it spot on. The fact is, the examiners are actors as well in a way, and I'm sure behave like perfect gentlemen outside of their day jobs so I expect they had fun training Nigel Hawthorne into his part. He surely couldn't have done such a good job without their cooperation.

He's not evil; years of dealing with stroppy deadbeats gives teachers, army sergeants and so on this kind of attitude - knowing that seventy per cent will drop out is demoralising, and he needs to weed out the worst as soon as possible.

Has anyone got the rest of this? It's great. And has anyone seen the documentary aired in the 90s about real cab drivers doing the knowledge? There was an inspector who was uncannily like the one in this drama. I should like to see that if anyone has it.
