Good movie... but why did they need Daniel to figure out the final symbol? Couldn't they just go through all of them one at a time until they found it? I mean, they already had the first six, so how hard could it be?

But they only needed the 7th symbol, the point of origin, not the destination. Can't the gate detect whether it's being dialed from the planet of the correct point of origin? If they were on Abydos, and put in Earth's address but put any other origin symbol besides Abydos, the gate shouldn't activate, right?

I don't know, but they were in another galazy and if I remember correctly you need the 7th symbol in order for the gate to give you the correct destination and send you all hte way there not just partway.
