Who was it who said, "Corruption oils the machinery of free government?" Probably some proto-con crook like Alexander Hamilton.
I think the European model of parliamentary government works better in this respect. There might be a bit of bargaining between coalition partners in places like Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, but nothing like the scale of pork-barrel politics one finds in the US, where each vote must be individually bought.
