Obviously John was not a big fan of any organized religion, but it was NOT "stupid Catholics" as you say but rather ignorant and misguided Bible Belt fundamentalists that hated (and still hate) him for what THEY say he stood for. Of course Beatles fans know what John stood for - Peace.
