If you look closely at his right middle finger and ring fingertips, he has the banjo thimbles on them. That allows him to pick like that. His left hand is amazing also, he is responsible for "The Byrds" sound

Also, when most people buy a 12 string and think that all they have to do is get the tab and they think they can play this like Roger, they are wrong. Because you have to have that banjo theory and ability to "travis pick" with your right hand and you need the thimbles. If you just strum with your right hand, it doesn't sound like Roger

Hi, michaelicu ---- uhh, yes, Roger McGuinn was "in the Byrds" *chuckle!* (it essentially was his property, and I think he owns the name to this day) The guitar is a Roger McGuinn Signature Model (370/12-RM), and they *do* cost a small fortune, if you can find one for sale. I rather suspect this particular one didn't ocst Roger himself a dime, though --- presumably, it's Serial #1 (of about a thousand made), and would've been presented to him by Rickenbacker.

He perfected that lightening style of picking playing 5 string banjo way before The Byrds cam along. The band's style is actually a hybrid of folk and Beatlerock combined. (McGuinn was always a big fan of theirs). His tone is not the greatest in this instructional video. However, Don't get me wrong. It sounds good, but he doesn't have near the compression on his guitar in this video that he normally uses for his patented "jingle jangle" sound.

The Byrds? This is Pete Seeger music with words adapted from The Bible, book of Ecclesiastes. No one sings or completes the song quite as Mr. Seeger spun it with his audiences at the beginning of the 60s struggle for peace. The Byrds simply sang in tribute to the man whose patriotic folk melodies lifted the veil of understanding from all our innocent ideas and governmental naivete to give us a global spirit to act locally and with good conscience. Humph, The Byrds. Roger McGuinn, get real.

You're being overly harsh. Pete Seeger himself said "a nice young man had a huge hit with that song". My guess is that Seeger made a lot of money on royalty payments from Columbia and the Byrds.

I certainly don't underate McGuinn. I've seen him on both his last two UK tours, and I stand in awe of the man's skill as a guitarist. Believe me, as a player myself of 40 years standing, I'm not easily impressed, but McGuinn impressed me. This man took US rock music away from the 12-bar formula as surely as The Beatles did here in the UK.
