Aristotle is one of the greatest philosophers that has ever lived, this, I think, is his best quote and it pretty much sums up the whole discipline of moral philosophy.

aristotle believed ... ( 7 months ago by dreANDjosh)
aristotle believed life (nature) was like a ladder which infused in to the Great Chain of Being....in general sense, plants are for animals, animals are for people, and even slaves and women were under Man. that i think is ridiculous. were are not a ladder, we are all one and should be respected equally. i'm sure he had other great philosophical views but he felt superior

Maybe because he lived in 322 BC?
Everyone thought like that
And those who didn't were probably seen as idiots, like her think racists are idiots nowadays.
It's just the social structure of the days
Aristotle was very intelligent, but it no way shape or form was he perfection. He wasn't even an abstinant man, which he considered to be perfection.
That is because he ... ( 6 months ago by cincynattifanmp)
That is because he was not as educated as we are today. With each passing moment, we each learn a little more. Sometimes this acquired information is not seen or noticed, but it is there. I hope to see that in my children's generation or my children's children's generation, that they will be educated enough to rid the world of its racial ignorance. Though I can hope and hope, I know that the true evils in our society today will continue until the final days of this Earth.

aristotle (and ... ( 5 months ago by archstan8)
aristotle (and plato) did not think the earth was flat. and anyone who thinks "we are all one" and that each generation will be smarter than the last is either delusional or bound to be disappointed. aristotle thought nature ought to be the guide. in nature, there is inequality and hierarchy. so it is with man also. tell me if this makes sense: to give equal respect and reward to all people regardless of merit. aristotle didn't think it did either.

funny how aristotle ... ( 1 month ago by scir91)
funny how aristotle talks about "the life of study and contemplation" as the best way to live in his book for 9 chapters. in his last chapter, he realizes that textbooks are a whole other world than real life and abandons the idea of studying as the best way of living. ever meet college professors? most have terrible body odor and no social skills. 'nuff said.

i wouldn't make such a statement, nakedbison. but one would be hard-pressed to find someone who wrote so much on so many topics, which influenced so many for so many centuries. he was wise, no question. his philosophy along with plato's rival the bible in wisdom. of this i have no doubt. there will not be another like him again.

that depends on a ... ( 2 weeks ago by nakedBison69)
that depends on a lot of things, such as your prior knowledge of Judaism, how deeply you want to get into it, how smart you are (which you probably are), and so on. But some of the best writers on Judaism in the last few decades are Joseph Telushkin, Aryeh Kaplan, Joseph Soloveitchik, Adin Steinsaltz, Shmuel Boteach, Jonathan Sacks, Abraham Twerski...there are many others, but these should keep you busy for a while
thanks nakedbison. ... ( 2 weeks ago by archstan8)
thanks nakedbison. and by the way, i agree with your assessment of academia--very insightful. i was a professor for over a decade. on the inside i can tell you it is much worse than you think. most but not all my colleagues had a childish disdain for capitalism and america. disgusting. i'm not convinced secondary schools are better.
wow, i am impressed ... ( 2 weeks ago by nakedBison69)
wow, i am impressed that you can see things so clearly. no offense intended, but secular professors are not men of wisdom, yet you somehow managed to see through the facade for what it is. i used to revere professors so much, but now generally hold them in contempt, until they demonstrate they are worthy of respect. i think a lot of it has to do with them getting tenure, working in the university environment that is detached from the real world, and them being ignorant of the bible
thanks. no offense ... ( 2 weeks ago by archstan8)
thanks. no offense taken. and you are right again. we have well trained very narrowly focused academics, who are not wise, who may not be able to teach, and who despise the bible (if they know it at all), and anything remotely religious in content--a discussion of the good (e.g.). in a certain way it is not their fault. academia after all is just a part of our declining culture, where "professionalism" is exalted above everything. add a shallow leftism and anything traditional becomes the enemy.
that is really too ... ( 2 weeks ago by nakedBison69)
that is really too bad. recently, i have developed a fascination with sacred Renaissance music, e.g. Palestrina, Thomas Tallis, etc. I have a long held interest in great classical literature, eg Shakespeare, Milton. Then there is the great artistic works of Michaelangelo, Rembrandt, etc and the great ancient Greek philosophers. Topping it all is the Bible, which is by far the most influential book in history. yet professors wish to reject all this. so sad, and so very unwise of them
