You said it: Statist. In real practice, merit gets relegated down, while personal connections and toadyism wins. He who kisses the leader's behind gets promoted, while those who work hard, and point out mistakes are punished. Show an example of a socialist state, there the state is considered to be what the people serve, and not what serves the people, that hasn't ended up as a cruel dictatorship or an economic ruin.

For one thing, Marxism isn't the only type of socialism. Take a look at many European countries that have adopted socialist programs, such as socialized healthcare. In general, these countries are doing pretty well.
As far as Marxist countries grow, you cannot deny the achievements of the USSR:
* It industrialized faster than most countries
* Sent the first humans to space
* Second country to earn nuclear weapons
* Over the first 22 years, increased literacy rate by 22 to 81%.

Read some history. It is true that the Soviets industrialized so fast due to draconian labor use (arrests and slavery)... many people died as prisoner/slaves... second country to have nukes, have you ever studied HOW they got them? The Rosenburgs, other spies GAVE them the plans... yes, sent first man into space, so we quickly caught up then surpassed them... literacy was required to run the industrialized country, can't blame them for that. Look up the cruelties upon their own people.

The Soviets did what they did in the names of Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels. Marx was anti death penalty... How many people were killed in the Purges? Marx was internationalist, the USSR embraced economic protectionism or what was coined 'socialism in one country'. Marx would be spinning in his grave if I was superstitious.

The USSR took awy all basic liberties and human rights, you were told BY the dictatorship where to live, what vocation, where to buy the bear essentials, how much, where to go to school, etc. It was a miserable existence and no one wanted it anymore, thats why it collapsed. Actually, sites like this would flourish under socialism. The internet would be completely free (its freedom is under constant threat from the capitalist state). The creators of sites like youtube and myspace sold their sites for millions way after the fact that they gained popularity. Under socialism, it wouldn't cost money to maintain a domain and manage a site, so we would all have equal opportunity to start websites without having to sell our property in exchange for money.

It wouldn't cost money? It would require resources, and money is the representation of resources; it is the medium by which resources can be exchanged without straight barter. Under socialism, Bill Gates would never have had approval from the bureaucratic moldies who would have nipped it in the bud. It is the combination of the Bill of Rights and capitalism that made the PC possible, then from that the internet was founded, etc. Socialists would never have allowed freedom of speech anyway.

Socialists are the destroyers of ideas... it would be only possible to parrot the "correct" points of view, as dissent isn't tolerable under state control of trade and ideas.
