I agree that a lot of politicians are imposing what they believe instead of what their consituents want. But I also would say that when a politician makes a decision about "what he believes to be best for the people," he'll be making that based on what he believes as well, religious or not.
I think the bottom line is that we need politicians who will do what the voters want, not what they want personally.
