Rio is one of the most violent cities in the world. As of 2007 the homicide rate of the greater metropolitan area stands at nearly 80 victims per week, with the majority of victims falling to homicide, assault, stray bullets or narcoterrorism. In 2001 the murder rate in Rio was 45 for every 100 thousand people and between 1978 and 2000, 49,900 people were killed in Rio. The numbers are comparable with war conflict zones like Baghdad and Kabul.
Rio de Janeiro's low paid and ill-equipped police is violent as well. In 2006 the police killed 1,063 people in the state of Rio de Janeiro, 1.195 in 2003 and as of April 2007 the police was killing 3.7 people a day. In comparison the American police killed just 347 people in whole of the USA during 2006. Rio's policeman earns on average only R$ 874 a month or R$ 10.488 (around US$ 5.500) a year. Compounding the problem of violence is impunity. Only 3% of the murders are solved by Rio's police.

I live in Panama City Panama, in an area called El Chorrillo, in a neighbourhood street called "Bagdad". Buildings here are full of gun shots, blown up houses, gangs that kill each other in pure day light, all the shit in Rio, but doesnt make it the WORST PLACE.
USA is multicultural gang history, Rio is mainly Brazilian Favela an shit. Only cause a place is dangerous , it aint worst. If Anything, I'd Say EL SALVADOR is the MOST Dangerous place in the World.

The biggest problem is that Rio has the most corrupt police sistem in the world, uncapable to solve any kind of problem. They kill everyone since that is no specific solution provided by the government to fix all the problem about the drug-trafic-system. The favelas control the drugs and it's people, which perhaps bring their kids to the "war" to try to fight against the corrupted cops. Resuming: this is all wrong, just wrong!!!! But people like to show only this side of Rio to everyone. tsc tsc

I just can't understand how a series of diffent governments can fail it's own people by not clearing up a corrupt police force and irradicating problems that lie within it. I know it's easier said than done, but I'm sure it is something which could be done, even if the government were to be more hard-line to it's own police force.
I don't know, maybe this is why I'm not a politician lol

Brazil is a beautiful country and in an amazing location and the people themselves are beautiful but to see this just makes you wonder what the hell is wrong with this world.
