A year ago Comcast terminated my families Internet because we used it too much despite the unlimited use (NOT access) clause. Now a year later they want us back? Here is my answer...
It's my understanding that Qwest doesn't have the resources to build out a pure FTTH network and I can understand that. But why would they want to prevent Utopianet from doing it? Oh well. I'll be happy up here as long as their techs get out to our remote terminal and connect the OC-3 line that's literally looped 3 feet in front of it inside a splitter case (since that will allow us to upgrade from 1.5Mb down to 7, I'm more than happy with 900K up but sometimes I just want more download).
They have the ...( 8 months ago by u235sentinel)
They have the resources along with other providers. I've been reading about the NII (national infrastructure Initiative) from 1994. Seems over 200 billion in OUR taxes was given to build a 45 meg up/down pipe over fiber to every American home by 2006. So I ask where is it??? teletruth even put out a book about it. Very insightful. anyway, other countries are "getting along" with their slow 50 meg up/down or 100 meg up/down. And we're happy with 1.5? Ugg
Here's what I find ...( 8 months ago by unrealalchemist)
Here's what I find amusing here; most people that get their computers store-bought usually get 100/10 Ethernet adapters instead of Gigabit, so they literally can't handle connections faster than Japan's 100/100 service. Then you get into the Gigabit realm where most new computers have Gigabit adapters, and even then, even if you have 2 adapters, France has been testing 2.5Gbps connections in parts of Paris (I think it's Paris, don't remember clearly).
I guess that would ...( 8 months ago by u235sentinel)
I guess that would depend on who you buy. I've built every computer in my home and each motherboard with built in NIC came with 10/100/1000. Of course they are either intel or asus motherboards but that's me :-) Even if the system has 10/100 NIC's, that's still a far cry better than the lousy internet we have today in America.

Yeah, I know, it was just to point out that some internet services are faster than a computer can handle, which is amusing to me.
good point... still ...( 8 months ago by u235sentinel)
good point... still it would be a nice problem to have compared to Concast's (or any other providers) 6/8/10 Mpg down and only 256k up. :-)
They are generous ...( 8 months ago by unrealalchemist)
They are generous in areas where they have real competition, I think the best service they can provide is 16 down 2 up which isn't bad, but after the promo period you have to start paying far out the ass.

the fact that so many places in america STILL haven't gotten fiber optics for internet shows how fucking behind we are in that area.

Hong Kong has 1 Gig rolling out to the home. And we're content with 1.5 Meg DSL when China is becoming the world leader in Internet technology?
oh god, you serious ...( 4 months ago by KOkun)
oh god, you serious?! 1GBps connections?! as in 125MBps downloading? good god we're slackin so hard right now and it's so sad. any word on how much that's going to cost? since 20Mbps fios connection for the maryland area is $53 a month atm.

Let's just say if you go over the bandwith limit you and everyone in your house has no life other than being on the Internet anyway. For me to exceed that limit and still have any sort of life would be impossible. It's in my view, impossible to reach unless you're torrenting 24/7.

Agreed. So what is Concast's explanation? No answer other than we used the Internet too much. We signed up with a account which was advertised "Unlimited usage for a flat monthly fee". I didn't bother to monitor our traffic then (I do now). I posted our usage on the blog. We hit 73Gigs one month cause I pulled down the 7.04 Ubuntu repo (needed for development). So we're not using 300 Gigs a month as claimed. And no way to speak with management to resolve it. That's because they are Concastic!!

My wife is from Ukraine. We subscribe to an internet service that allows here to stream russian television via the internet. She EASILY uses 5 or 6 gigs a day with this. We then have three other computers in the house. I deal a LOT with hundreds of High Res pictures a day which i upload and receive daily. 2 or 3 gigs from me per day. Then, you have netflix offering movies via internet, XBOX 360 being playes... 250 gigs isn't much when u use the service completely.

Yeah. Sad huh. Goes to show you how bad Concast is. You have all these unwritten rules and somehow you are supposed to just know what they are. What a company. Oh and no, I'm not going back despite their multiple contacts. They can bite me.

Nope. We did not run a server. I'm curious why you believe that. And if I wanted to run a server don't forget there are creative ways to hide that online. Perhaps you should check out the vids from Defcon15. I highly recommend it :-) BTW, how much is too much? Oh yeah, silence is your answer. Thank you for playing :-)
