the fire marshalls were badly trained and had no fire retardant clothing on, so purley was the only one who could get close to the fire, although his friendship to Williamson meant he had little regard for his own safety. There was only one fire extinguisher on hand, and the race was not even yellow flagged, so the firetruck took 8 minutes to get there. Security guards also prevented spectators from rushing to his aid. A sad day for motorsport.

Indeed the fire truck had been parked some 300 meters away from the crash site. It took, as you say, eight minutes for it to get there because its driver was not allowed to drive against the traffic; so it had to go all along the circuit until arriving when Roger had already been dead.
Many people may think he burnt to death; that is not 100% true. The young Englishman died of asphyxiation (breathing poisonous fuel fumes), and David Purley would later recall he heard Roger crying for help...
