Sure as hell don't need ABC "NEWS" telling me about engineering.
Early on, the electric was very viable, before we lost our street car and rail systems, then became drunk on gas.
Ford developed/leased an electric, the EV-1 and though people loved it, they took them back and crushed 'em.
GM decimated the street car system to sell buses.
Leave it to the "big three" (networks) to drag feet and equivocate about new tech...just like the "big three" old school auto makers. Screw the six of em.

Of course not - simple engineering - how many BTU's to move mass for 200 miles. How much per gallon for that many btu's vs kilowatt/hr.

i could cover my house with solar pannels and it would take about sixty days to recharge.(not much sun in uk at moment) and bear in mind that crusing at a steady one third power,this vehicle will run out of battery in one hour,flat out less than twenty minutes!

there is no upside either unless you are running on renewables,which ain`t easy. bear in mind bio fuels are currentley available for petrol and diesel vehicles. my small diesel pick up runs happily on readily available vegetable oil and returns a measured average of 56 miles/uk gallon.

Money seems to be the biggest problem developers have and big companies dont see a huge return on their investment because efficient and well built cars dont make Money, So why invest in a product that you wont make a profit in ?

There are so many factors to consider with this. Motor load, wind resistance, mechanical resistance, and the fact that 30% power will still accelerate the car. You use about 2-7% to maintain average highway speeds. A study several years ago showed that a large American pickup truck only needed around 15 horsepower(roughly 12kw) to maintain 55mph. 53kWh/12kW=4.41h run time. At 55mph this equals 242.55mi. I'm guessing this is very close to what the Tesla uses.
