I'm not even gonna touch "...they all have stretched out eyes..." besides stating the obvious that its a really stupid thing to say. But as for the movie, no it wasn't a major plotpoint, but all he'd eaten for 15 years prior was dumplings. He wanted something alive, fresh. And yes the director could've used a prop, but it would've taken away from the general shock value of the scene.
