The leap and catch is a standard dance move. The use of Broadway dancing is an interpretation of violence. It's not supposed to be realistic, it's artistic expression something completely lacking in almost all films today.

This opening prologue is brilliant...love the shots from in the air that cut one by one closer to ground level until you see the Jets sitting in the park...it is sheer genius, and they held the screening of the credits until the end of the film.
