Although Harlan Ellison is obnoxious judging from the videos of him I have been watching, he is absolutely correct. If I was a screenwriter, I wouldn't do anything unless I got paid for it.

Really want to agree with Ellison and the comments here. Loved his rant & am freelance myself. But the fact is, if the job you do can be so easily done by an amateur - (for free if they like!) companies should be able to use them. I know it sucks, but if no one can tell the difference between pro and amateur why pay for a pro? If they refuse to pay and end up with a pile of sh1t then it's their own problem. If what you do can be differentiated from an amateur then you've nothing to worry about

not what I'm getting at. You say its a craft, and I agree. But I also think its a craft that is NOT exclusive.
Lets face it, it doesn't take that much to write. You could get 10 people to write something about the same topic, and you'd get 10 original pieces of work. Not of the same standard, obviously, but you'd get 10 different pieces of work that would all, potentially, find their niche in the market.

If the pro's are being undercut by "so many goddamn writers out there with no idea that they're supposed to be paid", shouting about it isn't going to change it. Nor is acting pretentious.
Art's always going to draw a really fine line between hobby and craft. Loads of people write in their spare time and don't even want to be published for it. Plenty get published for it despite being shit anyway.

Dont get me wrong though - big companies who use every trick in the book to make every last dime, DESERVE this kind of hardline attitude. But its not use cannibalising the 'amateurs' in the profession, because one day you'll be dead and they'll be the pros. Thats just the way it goes.

He's so right, it's bullshit that companies expect people working for free. I'm reading some comments here saying writers are spoiled and ja-da-ja-da, sure maybe, but that doesn't mean that they have to work for free. No one works for free except slaves and we don't have slavery nowadays, now do we? The scariest thing is the fact that this bs goes for the whole business. Runners, grips and so on all have to work for free very often, just to get a foot in and that sucks.

There is something about writing that fails to register a dollar value in most people, yet everyone has bought a book at one time or another. Still, people cannot see the true value in writing because they cannot see the blood on the computer keys, the caffeine-induced headaches as you slave to make sense of your plot and characters, the endless hours of obsessive-compulsive rewriting and rewriting and rewriting. In this visual-intensive world of ours today, it's just paper and words.
