What kind of government do you want us to create in place of the old Saddam Hussein government? Do you want a Sunni government, or a Shi'a government or maybe it ought to be a Kurdish government, or maybe one based on the Ba'ath Party or maybe some combination of all of those? How long is that government likely to survive without U.S. military forces there to keep it propped up?
If you get into the business of committing U.S. forces on the ground in Iraq, to occupy the place, my guess is I'd probably still have people there today instead of having been able to bring them home. ... The bottom line question for me was: How many additional American lives is Saddam Hussein worth? The answer: not very damn many.

It is very simple, back then the Us needed Saddam to stay in power, scaring the Gulf states into keeping US bases in the region, today those Gulf states are gladly hosting US bases (CENTCOM in Qatar)without a need for e threat. Saddam was of no use to the US like he was when he invaded Iran and killed the Kurds (with US support). He had to go, regardless of US or Iraqi casualties.

Cheney is a smart guy and this goes to show he knew exactly what would happen if we went in there, which just shows the level of corruption and hypocrisy in the Bush administration. Does anybody really think it was a coincidence that Halliburton and other contractors got huge no bid contracts. Al Queda operates out of Afghanistan and Pakistan, not Iraq.
Saddam didn't tolerate terrorist organizations when he was in charge, because he perceived them to be a threat to his power, which is what he valued above all else.
He was an asshole, for sure, but Iraq was not a terrorist state with him there. Now it is and we can thank the current administration for that one.

We have "opportunities" to remove dictators the world over. What about Mugabe? What about Kim Jong Il? We can't police the world that way. it's not our right, and we've seent he consequences. They didn't want to turn Iraq into a Chaotic system where Iran could or would gain influence. Iraq was always there as a counter weight to Iranian power and influence in the region. So Saddam was there to counter Iran. Who they, and a lot of Americans, look at an enemy. We believe that they hate us and want to destroy us. So One evil to counter the other.
