well, as i've always seen it, it seems like a civil wartime anthem from the point of view of a daughter in a southern family. it would be easier to figure out and better clarified if it threw in the word yankee or something. haha.
that's just always how i saw it, a sad haunting melody with lyrics of haplessness and confederate pride? the video helped my idea of this a bit.
