What a song, what a voice & what an arrangement. Sadly we don't hear tunes like this in todays charts.

Yes, Paul Young's version came in for a lot of predictable stick from the soul elitists but I thought he made a more than decent job of it, sort of kicked ass in a very 80s way!

I agree, Paul Youngs intentions were always honourable as he is a soul fan from the early 70's. He never just re-hashed old soul songs.
Not sure what the soul elitists made of his version of "Wherever I lay my hat", but in my opinion he did more than cover the original, he gave it a new lease of life. And that ain't easy to do with a Marvin Gaye song, (albeit an obscure B-side).
