I don't think this is about who sings the "Ave" better, like on "American Idol". Quite the opposite, imho, is intended.
I think this duet was meant to juxtapose the deep and mournful traditional beauty of the "Ave" (Pavarotti)with the modern realities of life and war that humanity still struggles with. It is a reaching out to Mary to teach us unity and acceptance, not competition and judgement.
I find this eloquent and so relevant to life in general and especially at Christmas time.

I think the idea of a duet was a great, but to pick Bono as his other was somewhat a bad choice. I understand it was an anti-war, cry for peace performance. But there's so many other artists out there that could've complimented Pavarottis' voice, a female artist perhaps? Diana Damrau? Sarah Brightman? Or male? Andrea Bocelli? The list goes on. He did an amazing job though, just wow.
