They both are- Affirmed and Alydar. It's amazing to think the same horses finished 1-2 for all 3 races.

Such tactical advantage for Affirmed every time against Alydar. This race was a classic example, allowed to lead in fractions like 47:3 and 1:11:4. I don't know how Veitch expected Alydar to be able to loop outside and run down a great horse like Affirmed when the race/pace sets up like that.
In the Belmont he stayed close but that almost doesn't count since it was a plodding 50 second half mile yet Alydar still stayed slightly behind Affirmed.

Affirmed owned Alydar, they said Alydar's heart got broken. I loved it when they would make excuses for Alydar because the more people that beleived it the better price on Affirmed

I doubt it was broken considering he still showed a lot of heart in other races after the Belmont.

Alydar defeated Affirmed by 25 lenghs at the Arch of Triumph handicap probably two months after the Belmont.......After the race, Affirmed's jockey commented the fpllowing: "Alydar is a much better horse than Affirmed, We are just lucky!
