I am recording my guitar amp clean with an SM57. I want a mellow jazzy tone, but how loud should my amp be? Like i have it about 1/4 full volume, and I know i should be just experimenting but im in an apartment and I don't want to anger the neighboors! So are amps typically recorded loud??
interface wise? ... ( 3 weeks ago by theman362)
interface wise? depends what your budget is, its all about the quality of the converters, pre's and clock.
RME make great interfaces if you can afford it.
(btw i was saying that m-audio mics arent that bad, but the interfaces arent so good) :P

Yes, Amps are supposed to be loud so you can get the nuances of tone out of it. The lower the volume the worse off you are. Typically. What kind of amp, guitar do you have?

hehe, i used a pair of pulsar II SDC's on a classical recording of a symphonic wind orchestra a few weeks back in an xy pair, they were ok, but the neumann km184's sound better.

great advice throughout this vid ive found all these things worked for me working them out the hardway! i found you can get the best results on a budget from using budget guitars/bass with used old midi keys with free or cheap vsts and reaper (a sequencer like cubase), another thing is antares mic modler..turns cheap mics into better ones and also mastering software like spectralive gives a really professional edge

Using a Popular ... ( 2 weeks ago by 97warlock)
Using a Popular Mechenics 9.00 Mic from walmart I can get some great true tones, but it takes some real mic position tweaking & record level adjusting etc......but for a poor guy,it works good for now. Problem ive recently encountered was....My Highs suffer & if i back the mic off way from speaker i lose the bass. (Metal)

You should never "store" a ribbon mic laying down the "Ribbon" will stretch and ruin / change the microphones performance ribbons should always be stored standing up.

i think you set your 'minimum requirements' pretty high.
i get great results using a zoom h2 to record full band performances and then plugging in to a macbook for overdubs and mixing. that's all the equipment needed besides instruments and players. and i've done multi-track stuff on my own with just the macbook and garage band, plugging my guitars/basses straight into the input on the computer [with a 1/4-1/8" adapter on the instrument cable]. the zoom h2 could be fine as a stand-alone, 200USD
