The best interactive scene in this great movie is between Luke and his mom ... each knowing it would be the last time they ever spoke to each other. You could see where Luke got his cool by the way his mom was dying inside but still retaining her dignity and sense of self.

May I add that the time was of civil unrest. Whilst Rod Steiger's role was a great performance, but politics and current affairs, which I think influenced the decision(no doubt with good intentions) shouldn't override acting ability.
