Athens, the Greek capital, is often seen as the cradle of western civilization, and some of its oldest monuments date back thousands of years.
They have survived invasions and wars. But authorities there are now struggling to cope with a new kind of attack - graffiti.

Hell yeah raieven, tell them! Get your own Democracy, Philosophy, Mathematics, Geometry, Architecture, etc. ! Make your national buildings to look like the Senate, and House of Representatives, and Supreme Court and stop copying "our" culture!

You idiots talk about "copying graffiti, your culture". What about the basis of your culture? All of a sudden you forget about Democracy (Greek), Philosophy (Greek), Geometry (Greek), architecture of US National Buildings such as the Supreme Court and Congress (Greek). All this stuff that is a HUGE part of the American way of life, and you guys want to talk smack about copying graffiti? I like beautiful graffiti myself, but seriously give me a break, don't talk shit about copying culture.

While that is interesting, thankfully I already knew all that. I think you missed my point entirely. Hip-Hop culture is distinctly American, and while the "Founding Fathers" modeled the US on ancient Athens, I think this young guy is trying too hard to NOT be Greek but to be American (as he has seen it on MTV), I wish he would realize the beauty of his own countries heritage, and not just pick the worst parts of the USA's.

Yes, I see what you are saying, but no culture can be entirely influenced by their own people, even the Greeks with so much culture will be influenced by outsiders. Hip hop culture is awesome, it has spread throughout the world, just as other cultures have spread to the USA. He can be proud to be a Greek and of his culture, but also adopt the Hip hop culture of the USA. Adopting (or copying if that's what you want to call it)works both ways. That's why I mentioned the Greeks contributions...

..because the USA adopted Greek culture, Greeks mayf adopt USA's culture. What bothered me is people say "get your own culture". There is nothing wrong with the USA and the western world adopting Greeks culture. In fact, I feel it as the ultimate compliment. It's like they're saying "we like this culture so much, we will use it in our own country". So what I'm saying is Greeks adopting the hip hop culture should be taken as a compliment, not as an offense. Adopting cultures works both ways(-:

Graffiti is the most beautiful thing all over the world, and they say that is a way of MARKING on the wall, its not that, its art, and for some people like me (i am a street bomber) its the way to feel that you really exist, that you do what you like and no-one can tell you anything (apart the police, that is F@%*ED be the government)

jaze, I agree it can be very beautiful, depending on where it's sprayed. I think however, places like ancient ruins that have been there for thousands of years deserve the respect of everyone and are off limits. Peoples homes too. At around the stadiums in Athens and places like that it can look really cool though. Hip Hop is great (the true hip hop). If you can understand Greek, there is some really cool hip hop music (lyrical talented stuff) coming out of Greece that I have found as well.

2) It is laughable to truly believe that graffiti in Athens Greece, "the cradle of western civilization", is even remotely a new issue. Clear evidence of graffiti has been unearthed amongst ancient civilizations, including, and primarily, Ancient Greece. The word graffiti was derived from a Latin word; Latin = used in ancient times.
Graffiti is simply returning full circle back to its roots, only modernized!
