IBT3 - Independent Speaking topics
Uploaded by: expatozzie1
Video Description:
This is a 2nd filming of a TOEFL IBT3 class (with additional students this time and others absent) filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Thu 8 May 08.
Independent speaking topic questions were shown on the whiteboard via an overhead projector. Each student was given a random question, so no previous preparation could be made.
Depending on the length of the question, each student was given either 5 or 10 seconds reading time. This was followed by 15 seconds preparation time. Finally, the students had 45 seconds to respond to the question.
The most common problems encountered by students during this exercise appear to be difficulty to maintain sentence structure and cohesion throughout the response. That is why it is important to ensure that students become familiar and comfortable with the use of transitions.
There is a remarked improvement usually in responses when students are requested to omit the word 'because' when providing reasons. Instead, students using other transitions (chain/sequence transitions) such as 'First of all', 'To begin', 'My first reason is', 'To start with', 'Firstly', etc, tend to do much better. They find it easier to separate their different thoughts and follow on with additional sequence transitions. E.g. 'Next', 'Secondly', 'My second reason is', 'My next point is', 'Furthermore', 'In addition', etc.
Generally in a 45 second period, 2 or 3 reasons are enough. Details and/or examples are also important to include with each reason (and are usually expected).
Students had little preparation for this exercise, so the usual problems are apparent, such as: the over use of 'because', 'and', 'ah', 'um'.
.
This video will serve as a benchmark of progress for these students, who can refer to it over the course of their studies and development in order to gauge their performance.
Overall, these students made a good effort and were enthusiastic about the exercise. I recommend that it should be an integral part of teaching English. Future video playbacks in front of students reveals marked improvements and can be a confidence booster as well as a motivational tool for further studies.
